The World Boxing Super Series is a new word in the art of promotion. The authors of the idea are the famous German promoter Kalle Saurland and his American partner Richard Shafer.
We can perhaps say that the WBSS is a kind of analogue of the football Champions League, in which the strongest clubs on the planet sort things out on a regular basis and for good money. Something like a global unification event that will somewhat streamline the chaos reigning in the world of boxing. After all, trying to figure out the number and quality of champions in the main professional versions (WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF), the devil himself will break his leg.
The starting WBSS season involves competition in two categories: the first heavy weight (up to 90.7 kg) and the second middle weight (up to 76.4 kg). And then we will see.
The total prize fund of the super series is $50 million. The winners, in addition to the championship belts stipulated by the regulations of each fight in one of the main versions, will receive a special trophy: the Muhammad Ali Cup.
Who and how?
The tournament format is as simple as possible. In each of the two weight categories, 8 boxers are entered, divided into 2 groups (“seeded” and “unseeded”). The “seeded”, that is, potential favorites, have the right to choose an opponent from the “unseeded” group.
The winners of the quarterfinal pairs advance to the 1/2 finals, the winners of the semifinals meet in the decisive match. Thus, the first season of WBSS consists of 14 fights (7 in each category).
First heavy weight. “Seeded”: Murat Gassiev (Russia), Mairis Briedis (Latvia), Yunier Dorticos (Cuba), Alexander Usik (Ukraine). “Unseeded”: Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (Poland), Mike Perez (Cuba), Dmitry Kudryashov (Russia), Marco Huck (Germany).
Second average weight. “Seeded”: George Groves, Chris Eubank, Callum Smith (all - Great Britain), Jurgen Bremer (Germany). Unseeded: Jamie Cox (Great Britain), Avni Yildirim (Turkey), Erik Skoglund (Sweden), Rob Brunt (USA).

Russia is represented in the new tournament by two athletes. Both of them compete in the prestigious heavy category and both, according to experts, are quite capable of claiming the final victory.
Murat Gassiev, current IBF world champion:
“I’m very excited because this tournament provides an opportunity to become a unified champion. I'm ready for this moment and looking forward to winning. I think I was the first boxer to sign a contract to participate in this tournament. I immediately agreed. The opponent doesn't matter to me, I'm going to win this competition, so I'm ready for any challenge.
“The outcome of the draw turned out normal, in my opinion,” he believes manager of Dmitry Kudryashov(he is the holder of the WBC Silver championship belt) Vadim Kornilov.— The most important thing is that Dmitry got the opportunity to box for the world title. This is what he wanted. Kudryashov has a great chance of winning the Super Series.

The quarterfinal stage of the WBSS (World Boxing Super Series) tournament has ended, which determined the four boxers in the 1st heavyweight division who will determine the absolute leader of the division and the winner of the super prize in the form of a large cash reward and the “Mohammed Ali Cup”.
The ½ finals are scheduled for January-February 2018. Let's take a look at the list of remaining participants. There are four battles left behind, in which victories were won Alexander Usik, Murat Gassiev, Yunier Dorticos And Mairis Briedis.
Alexander Usik
Ukrainian world champion according to WBO Alexander Usik in September he fought against the German Marco Huck on his territory in Germany, and was able to demonstrate everything so that the audience understood that he was the No. 1 favorite in this tournament.
Usyk literally crushed his opponent by technical knockout in the 10th round, clearly dominating throughout the entire distance of the fight. Now, the Ukrainian will face a semi-final meeting with the WBC title holder Latvian Mairis Briedis.
Murat Gassiev
IBF world champion 24-year-old Russian Murat Gassiev (25-0, 18 KOs) conducted the final fight of the quarterfinal stage on October 21 in Newark (New Jersey, USA), where he cleanly knocked out the Polish ring veteran with a blow to the liver without any problems Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (53-4-1, 37 KOs).
Together with Ukrainian Alexander Usik, Murat is also considered one of the favorites of the tournament. If both boxers perform successfully in their next fights, they will be able to determine the best cruiserweight fighter of today in a head-to-head bet.
In the semifinal match, Gassiev will fight against the formidable Cuban Yunier Dorticos, who in turn managed to upset another Russian in the quarterfinals - Dmitry Kudryashov.
Mairis Briedis
WBC champion Latvian Mairis Briedis (23-0, 18 KOs) Before the tournament, he was considered one of the main candidates for victory. But, after his not very convincing victory on points over the championship outsider, Cuban Mike Perez (22-3-1, 14 KOs), who withered into the cruiserweight category from the super heavyweight category - Briedis faded into the background behind Usik and Gassiev.
Let us remind you once again that Briedis will fight Usik in the semifinals.
Yunier Dorticos
One of the main discoveries of the tournament was the undefeated Cuban knockout artist Junior Dorticos (22-0, 21 KOs), who at the end of September in San Antonio (Texas, USA) very quickly dealt with the Russian Dmitry Kudryashov (21-2, 21 KOs) labeled himself as a "dark horse".
Dorticos will have to fight his semifinal fight with IBF champion Murat Gassiev, but now no one is putting the Cuban in the place of a clear underdog.
